Gamedev without a goal. Game doodling.

The last couple of days I did something that I haven’t done in a long time. I started making a game without an end goal in mind. I didn’t know what I was gonna do and just let the flow take over. I realized that making games is like painting a picture, composing a piece of music or creating any other kinds of art. It’s a creative process. Thinking too much in advance is for me personally the worst thing I can do when it comes to making games. It always makes me overthink. I tend to make a massive todo-list beforehand and then I just work through that list like it’s a conveyor belt in a factory. This kills my creativity. I can not work and function like that in the long run.

That’s why I started to work in a completely different way. I just make stuff. When I start a gamedev session I don’t want to have a plan on what I will make. I just look at my project, think of things that I could add and then I just do it. This minimizes the time I spend thinking about stuff and maximizes the time I’m actually working. Working like this isn’t just more productive for me, it also makes the work feel less like “work” but more like playing a game. It’s just fun going with the flow.

Here is a little video of the game that I’m currently making. It’s a PICO-8 game called “Gleeb Gluub”.
